I saw Portishead tonight. Somehow, by some strange turn of luck, I ended up front row. I’m not into taking pictures or videos of bands when I am at a concert but my friend Elli took this amazing picture of Beth Gibbons. Seeing “Roads” live was like “Street Spirit” part deux. Beth Gibbon’s voice teeters on the edge of grace and redemption in that song. The way they reinvented “Wandering Star” was absolutely riveting (more than they already are). They are in a league all their own.
So, universe, thanks for sending great musical moments my way. Between seeing Radiohead and Portishead within weeks of each other, you can feel free to start screwing me over again.
