RE: “The web’s new walls: How the threats to the internet’s openness can be averted” Via the Economist
What is it about: Drawing on issues like Internet censorship, semi-closed online networks (e.g., Facebook), and the profitability of disregarding net neutrality, the article is a concise analysis of how the Web’s openness has changed into a closed system.
My only criticism is that this article reads a little too much like Lawrence Lessig’s The Future of Ideas without citing the book. Lessig’s argument was that the original openness of the Internet and Silicon Valley culture created the conditions necessary for people to innovate and implement their ideas into action. Now that some of the individuals (e.g., Steve Jobs) have become incredibly rich, they have started to restrict or close some of their platforms and products in order to maintain and maximize profits. This stranglehold on profits in turn destroys the very culture that gave rise to the original, now profitable ideas, which in turn calls the future of ideas into question. It’s a very smart, philosophical analysis of the Internet and entrepreneurship.
